Former Devoe Paint Factory/110-112 Horatio Street in the Far West Village Landmarked

This morning the LPC also voted to designate the former Devoe Paint Factory at 110-112 Horatio Street in the Far West Village a New York City Landmark.  This is another designation which grew out of the campaign to save the Far West Village spearheaded by GVSHP.  110-112 Horatio Street is one of eight sites in the Far West Village which the LPC promised to landmark in 2005; four have now been landmarked, while four still await action by the LPC.  This followed the downzoning of much of the Far West Village in 2005, which reduced the allowable size of new development, and the LPC's extension of historic district protections to six blocks in the Far West Village in 2006, which also grew out of the campaign to save the Far West Village.

Next Tuesday, June 24th, the Landmarks Preservation Commission will hold a hearing on landmarking the former Devoe Paint Factory at 110-112 Horatio Street in the Far West Village.  The last remnant of a large industrial complex in the Far West Village, the Devoe Paint Factory was part of both GVSHP's proposed Gansevoort Market Historic District and proposed Far West Village Historic District.  While the Landmarks Preservation Commission declined to include this building in both designations, the Commission did instead promise to designate this building along with seven other individual sites in the Far West Village as landmarks, three of which have already been designated

This morning the LPC also unanimously voted to calendar (i.e. begin formal consideration of) the proposed landmark designation of 110-112 Horatio Street, the former Devoe Paint Factory in the Far West Village.  The building is one of eight individual landmarks the LPC promised to designate in the Far West Village in 2005 in response to the push for extension of landmark and zoning protections in the area led by GVSHP.  The Keller Hotel, 159 Charles Street, and 354 West 11th Street were designated in March of last year, while Westbeth, Charles Lane, and 370 and 372 West 11th Street are the four remaining promised individual landmark designations which the LPC has not yet acted upon.  In 2005 the City Planning Commission passed an extensive downzoning of much, but not all, of the area, and in 2006 the LPC extended the Greenwich Village Historic District and designated the Weehawken Street Historic District, also in response to the push to preserve the Far West Village.
