Happy Earth Day from GVSHP!

The 1901 Beaux Arts Ernest Flagg Rectory that houses the Neighborhood Preservation Center.

Preservation is a very vital component of sustainability, so it is no surprise that GVSHP’s office is in an historic building with a strong commitment to being green.  The Neighborhood Preservation Center is housed in the historic Ernest Flagg Rectory of St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery.  NPC, as it’s called, is dedicated to facilitating and encouraging citizen participation in the improvement and protection of New York City’s diverse neighborhoods.  GVSHP, the Historic Districts Council and the St. Mark’s Historic Landmark Fund, are the three resident partners who call the Neighborhood Preservation Center home.  Other non-profit groups like the Green Guerillas and Manhattan Land Trust also share space in the building and help us with ways to integrate green space ideas with preservation.

Last summer the St. Mark’s Historic Landmark Fund worked with the Lower East Side Ecology Center in their free EcoBizNYC Sustainable Small Business Program. LESEC representatives evaluated energy use, waste disposal patterns, and product purchases and immediately qualified NPC as a Bronze Sustainable Business!  Everyone at the Center is unbelievably proud and is now working towards Gold level by trying to do things like increase energy efficiency and lower water usage.
