Thank you to everyone who joined us last night as we celebrated our 33rd Annual Meeting and presentation of the Village Awards at the beautiful Tishman Auditorium at The New School, one of our favorite events of the year. At this festive mix of business and pleasure, our valued members and the general public get to hear about GVSHP activities and accomplishments over the last year, and our members vote to select our board of trustees. All come to support and honor the organizations, businesses, and individuals who have been chosen to receive the Village Awards.

For those who missed it, or for any who want to review it, the annual report from our Executive Director and the awards presentations are now up on our website here.

This year’s roster of awardees was truly impressive. Two independent pharmacies (one from the East Village, and one from the South Village) were chosen for their very survival in a city filled with look-alike chain stores, but also their dedicated respect for their past, their vintage signs, and their highly personal customer service — Block Drug Store, on Second Avenue at East 6th Street, and Avignone Chemists, located on Bleecker Street between Downing and Carmine Streets.

Sir Winston Churchill Square will be feted on June 17 at the Annual Village Awards Ceremony.

A Village Award also went to the Winston Churchill Square, a small but lush little park located next door to Avignone Chemists, on the corner of Bleecker and Downing Streets. This park is made beautiful through the hard work of some very dedicated volunteers.
Jeremiah Shea, who has worked wonders in his East Village neighborhood, received a Village Award for his leadership role with the Ninth Precinct Community Council. NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan was given a Village Award for their fearless opposition to the NYU expansion plan, which they feel (as do we here at GVSHP) is all wrong for Greenwich Village.

And this year, the Sixth Annual Regina Kellerman Award was presented to our good friends at the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors (BAN).  You would be hard pressed to find a more dedicated and hard-working group of caring neighbors who are so committed to preventing the destruction of such a unique neighborhood.

None of what we do would be possible without the hard work and support of our trustees and members. If you are not already a GVSHP member, won’t you consider joining us?

Check our website for updates with more photos of last night’s ceremony.
