Halloween Happenings in the Village
The Village does Halloween like no other NYC community, featuring parades, festivals, and plenty of children’s activities, but what would you expect from the neighborhood that devised the original Halloween parade? So we thought we’d round up Halloween-related happenings taking place in the ‘hood.
The Village Halloween Parade, which had its origins at Westbeth, celebrates its 40th anniversary tonight. The parade sat last year out following Hurricane Sandy, but is back this year with the theme “Revival.” The parade runs up 6th Avenue, from Spring Street to 16th Street from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
Halloween continues through November 4th at “Manhattan’s Most Haunted House,” the Merchant’s House Museum. The house is curated in mourning for patriarch Seabury Tredwell and tonight, guests can listen to dramatic readings from 19th century Gothic literature. If you are still on the lookout for a Halloween costume, you can shop at New York Costumes, one of the only year-round costume shops in New York. The Halloween merchandise is housed in a beautiful 1888 building with Gothic arched windows and intact cast iron storefronts.
Abingdon Square Park turns into a pumpkin patch this evening from 6:00 to 10:00. Jack-o-Lanterns carved by neighborhoods kids will be on display. This free event is sponsored by the Abingdon Square Conservancy.
And this past weekend saw plenty of Halloween-related festivals. Dogs took over Tompkins Square Park on Saturday for the much-beloved Annual Halloween Dog Parade. Jefferson Market Garden, The High Line, Friends of Hudson River Park, and the Meatpacking District Improvement Association hosted Harvest and Halloween Festivals, and children took to the streets for the 17th annual Washington Square Park Children’s Halloween Parade and the West Village Children’s Halloween Festival.
