On Monday evening, November 17th, we’ll present a program with photographer Janko Puls and his new book “Point of View New York City: A Visual Game of the City You Think You Know.” Here is what people are saying about this book:

“A thoughtful and unique take on the fabric of the city…in a new and refreshing way”
–Richard Berenholtz, photographer and author of “Panoramic New York”

“…a fresh perspective…to challenge you to look at locations that you may have passed by many times but never truly appreciated.”
-James T. & Karla L. Murray, photographers and authors of “New York Nights” and “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York.” [James & Karla will be doing a program with us next month.]

“Janko Puls approaches the city with a wonderfully fresh eye…:
-Bo Zaudners, writer and photographer, Smithsonian, National Geographic Traveler

As I looked at the images in the book, I kept thinking, “I know this, but what is it? I can’t quite place it…” Janko sees things differently, and captures the most interesting points of view, as the title of the book implies. I was surprised at how often he had me fooled into thinking I knew what I was looking at, but I was wrong.

For instance, here is a view of the Washington Square Arch, as most people see it:

But wait until you see the photo that Janko took of the arch. It will make you stop and think for a moment! (Sorry, I can’t show it to you here!)

The book features images of places all around the five boroughs, but on Monday, Janko will focus on the locations in Greenwich Village, NoHo and the East Village that appear in the book. One of my favorites, on page 102, is of the statue of Sylvette, which I wrote about in an earlier Off the Grid post.

There are still a few seats left and the program is free, but you must make a reservation.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. And with gift-giving season upon us, this book is perfect for anyone who loves New York City!
