Welcome Aboard, Matthew Morowitz

Today we welcome to the GVSHP staff Matthew Morowitz, GVSHP’s new Administrative Assistant, replacing Meaghan Collins.  We’re very excited to have Matthew on board, who will be involved in everything from GVSHP’s advocacy initiatives, to our educational programs, to our member services.

Welcome aboard, Matthew!
Welcome aboard, Matthew!

You’ll see Matthew at many of our upcoming programs, as well as at our Annual Meeting and Village Awards presentation next Wednesday, June 17th.

Matthew previously worked for the historic Salmagundi Club located on 5th Avenue here in the Village, and continues to write and volunteer for Art in Odd Places, 14th Street’s longest running public art festival and an organization that promotes public space awareness.  He graduated from Dickinson College in 2011 with a dual B.A. in archeology and art history and comes from a background in cultural resource management, having interned for the National Park Service in Petersburg, VA in resource management and archeology, and assisted with archeological surveys and excavations in the NY/NJ metropolitan area.

Having grown up outside of New York City in New Jersey, Matthew always had interest in and connection with the city and is excited to start work with the GVSHP and dive deeper into its rich history and culture.  “Being part of GVSHP feels like a natural progression from and culmination of my background in archeology, experiences in cultural resources and public space awareness, and interest in urbanism.”

GVSHP's recent house tour kicked off at the Salmagundi Club, where many GVSHP programs (where you will see Matthew) will also be held.

“The Village is also one of my favorite places in New York City,” Matthew adds. “I have always been fascinated by how different the people, the architecture, and the vibe of the neighborhoods change as one moves from west to east.  I generally spend most of my free time exploring the different parts of the Village and always bring visiting friends who want to ‘experience’ New York City here first.  Though I currently live in Brooklyn, the Village to me feels like a second home.”
