Honorary Street Names: 1st Avenue

Our latest examination of honorific street names takes us further into the East Village to 1st Avenue.  From 14th Street all the way to Houston, 3 honorifics exist along this avenue:

Jodie Lane Place.
Jodie Lane Place.

Jodie Lane Place- Located on 11th Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, there is an unfortunately tragic story behind this honorific.  Jodie Shonah Lane (1973-2004) was a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology who died from being electrocuted on January 16, 2004.  She was walking her two dogs in the East Village when she stepped onto an electrified manhole on 11th Street.  Her death prompted efforts to eliminate dangerous, substandard equipment installed in city streets.  Read more about her tragic story here.

Sara Curry Way- 1st Avenue at St. Mark’s Place is the location of Sara Curry Way.  Sara Curry (1865-1940) is the founder of the Little Missionary’s Day Nursery, which provides affordable day care to children of all ethnic and religious backgrounds.  The Nursery also donates a portion of its income to provide tuition assistance and still continues to serve its community.

Frieda Zames Way.

Frieda Zames Way- Named for Frieda Zames (1932-2005), who served for several terms as the President of Disabled In Action of New York, Frieda Zames Way is located at 4th Street and 1st Avenue.  One of her greatest contributions was increasing access to subways and city buses for mobility-impaired peoples.  Frieda also fought to insure accessibility to polling sites.
