Welcome Aboard, Anna Marcum

Today Anna Marcum joins Village Preservation as our Director of Research and Preservation. Anna is an architectural historian and preservationist based in Brooklyn who has worked on historic preservation projects in cities across the country, from Boston to New Orleans, Los Angeles to the Texas Gulf Coast. She comes to Village Preservation from the Center for Architecture on LaGuardia Place, where she expanded the organization’s institutional giving program and played an integral role in the creation and implementation of the Center for Architecture Lab, a multi-month, multi-disciplinary residency program for new voices in architecture and design.

Anna has written extensively for Atomic RanchArchitects’ Newspaper, and Preservation in Print, about topics ranging from modernism on the West Coast to the unrecognized contributions of female architects like Eleanor Raymond, adaptive reuse strategies for southern “equalization schools,” and calls to remove and recontextualize Confederate monuments.

Anna presented her research about innovative site interpretation methods for New Orleans’ Canal Street in the “Projects in Progress” poster session at the Society of Architectural Historians 72nd Annual International Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. Anna’s research, writing, and advocacy efforts have naturally evolved into public speaking engagements on the Preservation Destination podcast, and a Trading Notes panel for the Architect’s Newspaper.

Anna is excited to apply her research and writing acumen to her work at Village Preservation. She says: “I believe it is the role of the preservationist to foster growth that enriches historic surroundings instead of cannibalizing them. Historic preservation, particularly in New York, is too often seen as an unnecessary hindrance instead of a catalyst for creativity and opportunity. As Director of Research and Preservation, I hope to create a culture of solutions-based preservation that promotes community involvement and creativity. Village Preservation is an iconic fixture in the story of historic preservation in New York City, and I am thrilled to join this phenomenal team.”
