In a former post, we took a look at the past and future of the Mars Bar. Today we sadly report that the building’s demolition has been made official…

A demolition permit for the site has been approved by the Department of Buildings. Say goodbye to another venerable East Village small business.

If you are upset by this chipping-away at the neighborhood’s historic character, support the designation of the two East Village Historic Districts, which were recently proposed by the City, and GVSHP’s efforts to expand their boundaries. Landmarking will ensure that such devastating losses are no longer the norm in this neighborhood.
