Newman’s Own Village Home
Paul Newman (January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008) was one of the most renowned American actors of the twentieth century, appearing in The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, and many Broadway plays. He was also an innovative philanthropist who created the Newman’s Own Foundation, based out of Westport Connecticut, which produces the popular lines of salad dressing, sauces, and other food products, the profits of which go to charity. But did you know that early in his career Newman and his second wife, Joanne Woodward (a 1957 Academy Award winner) lived in the Village?
The Life Magazine photo archive has some great photos of Newman and Woodward at their home on West 11th Street taken in 1960. Newman and Woodward lived together in the Village (in what would later be part of the Greenwich Village Historic District) during the late 1950s and early 1960s with their two chihuahuas (and oversized table lamps), and by 1959 had their first child together. Though the desire for privacy would eventually lead the couple and their growing family up to Connecticut, the couple can still be called honorary Villagers in our book.

I’d like to make a minor correction to the record here. The Newmans lived not on West Eleventh Street but on East Eleventh. I’m certain of this because I remember the excitement among the neighborhood teen girls, myself included, when they moved in, circa 1958. I don’t remember their building number, but they lived directly across the street from me and my family, who were at number 21. We caught occasional glimpses of Joanne Woodward with baby Nell, but I don’t recall ever seeing Paul.

The late Paul Newman’s Fifth Ave. co-op has sold for about $11 million. A real estate source told The News’ Jason Sheftell Thursday that no one even knew it was the actor’s home. The “rustic and elegant” apartment, at the corner of 93rd St. and Fifth Ave., is where he lived with his wife, actress Joanne Woodward. The Corcoran Group had the exclusive listing.
I thought Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward lived at 230 East 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
