Welcome aboard, Karen Loew

Karen Loew joins us today as GVSHP’s new Director of East Village and Special Projects. I hope you’ll join us in welcoming Karen to the GVSHP family.

Welcome aboard Karen!
Welcome aboard Karen!

Karen is a writer and editor with a history of involvement in projects about preservation and place, from joining Friends of the High Line as its first volunteer more than a decade ago (and volunteering on the High Line to this day), to creating a documentary short about one East Village intersection.

A former editor-in-chief of the public policy website CityLimits.org, Karen loves New York City and considers Greenwich Village nirvana. She served as associate editor of the Forward, beat reporter at The Tennessean, and has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic and Next City. A native Virginian, she studied English Literature at the University of Virginia and got her start covering zoning and development issues, among others, at newspapers in her home state.

At GVSHP, Karen will not only be coordinating our East Village work — advocating for expanded landmark and zoning protections, and working with our allies and colleagues to protect small businesses, promote the arts, and advance all things that make the East Village unique and wonderful — but will be in charge of many “special projects,” ranging from responding to attacks on landmarking by REBNY to increasing GVSHP’s social media presence and outreach in the community.

If you want to reach Karen, she’s at (212) 475-9585 x33, or kloew [at] gvshp.org.
