My favorite farmers’ market: Abingdon Square Greenmarket

Back in October, Village PReservation worked with our friends and neighbors at GrowNYC, Abingdon Square Conservancy, and the Abingdon Square Greenmarket on a history and photo project about Abingdon Square. We had a great time and really enjoyed talking with people at the market, and working with GrowNYC. Our guests were treated to cider from Red Jacket Orchards and brownies from Bread Alone, two of the vendors at the market. These delicious treats were a big hit!

Abingdon Square is wonderful little park, rich with history, and a perfect spot for a farmers’ market. Did you know that the Abingdon Square Greenmarket is open year-round?  Yes, you can still get apples, pears, turnips, squash, potatoes, onions, parsnips, carrots, cabbage, beets, and beans from local farmers in December, January and February. Also available are fresh-caught fish, farmstead goats’ and cows’ milk cheeses, fresh cider and juices, organic baked goods, flowers, turkey, and pasture-raised eggs. Definitely worth a visit!

Next month, on Tuesday, January 7th, Village Preservation will be presenting an evening with Barry Benepe, co-founder of Greenmarket. Mr. Benepe will talk about the early days of farmers’ markets in New York City and the evolution of Greenmarket and GrowNYC. We are still working on the details of this program, but check out our website page soon for updates.
