foulkesAlthough the summer months mean vacation time for some people, here at GVSHP, we don’t slow down! Our free public programs are still in full swing.

This Wednesday evening we’ll present a program with our co-sponsors at The New School about the history of this Village institution. Julia Foulkes, Associate Professor of History, has entitled her lecture/slideshow, “What is New is Old.” Julia has been hard at work researching this almost 100-year-old school, and has found some interesting old photos and lots of information to share with us.

Later this month, on Tuesday, July 21st, photographer Efrain Gonzalez will offer a lecture and slideshow featuring photos he took in the 1980s of the Far West Village and Meatpacking District. As you know, this neighborhood has changed so much since those days. Efrain’s program is titled “Night Vision” because these photos were taken between sunset and sunrise, when the neighborhood revealed an underground counterculture that was not experienced by the general population.

dwellAnd on Wednesday, July 29th, our series “OMG!: Churches and Synagogues of Greenwich Village” will continue with a visit to the First Ukrainian Assembly of God at 59 Cooper Square. This New York City Landmark building, originally constructed for the Metropolitan Savings Bank in 1867 and designated a landmark in 1969, is an impressive marble work of the French Second Empire style. It’s currently the meeting place for Dwell Church, and Reverend Pete Armstrong will present a history and tour of the premises.

If you would like to attend any of these programs, please call 212-475-9585, ext. 35, or send an e-mail.

And that’s just July, we have more summer programs planned for August, so don’t board that Hamptons Jitney just yet.
