Private Tour of ‘Inventing Downtown’ Exhibit for GVSHP Members

Inventing Downtown: Artist-Run Galleries in New York City 1952-1965

Our friends at the Grey Art Gallery hosted a wonderful private tour of their most recent exhibition for GVSHP members last night! The exhibition, entitled Inventing Downtown: Artist –Run Galleries in New York City 1952-1965, highlights artists’ efforts to create new exhibition venues for innovative and ever-evolving works of art — from abstract and figurative painting, assemblage, sculpture, and works on paper, to groundbreaking installations and performances.
The exhibition contends that artist-run galleries shaped American art, with East 10th Street in the 1950’s having been the epicenter of the movement.

Brian Bently, graduate curatorial assistant at the Grey Art Gallery, led the tour.

Red Grooms, Claus Oldenburg, Mimi Gross, Jim Dine, and Yoko Ono are among the many artists represented in the beautifully curated show.

The exhibition runs from January 10, 2017 through April 1, 2017. Don’t miss it.
