More Historic Images? Yes, Please!
We recently added two new collections of photographs to the GVSHP Historic Image Archive, and they do not fail to impress! One is the Meatpacking District Above 14th Street/Chelsea Market/High Line Before Transformation and it comes from GVSHP’s own photo archives, taken in early 2002 as part of our advocacy efforts to preserve the Meatpacking District. The other is Part 4 of Carole Teller’s Changing New York, 1960s-1990s which is our latest installment of images from the personal collection of East Village artist Carole Teller.
The Meatpacking pictures have some great images of the High Line prior to its conversion to a park. These pictures illustrate how successful this adaptive re-use was given the view from the street in 2002 is the same view today.
Also on display throughout the Meatpacking pictures is the rapidly disappearing grittiness of the area as seen in this now demolished building at 412-416 West 15th Street.
There’s also some great pictures of Chelsea Market when it too was gritty.
You may remember that one of the other collections by Carole Teller was photos of the filming of the Godfather Part II in the East Village. The just-released Carole Teller photo collection include pictures of the filming of Ragtime in the East Village in 1980. Ragtime was a movie released in 1981 which takes place partially in New York City during the beginning of the 20th century.
There are also some stunning rooftop views. My favorite is this one from St. Vincent Hospital, with the World Trade Center visible.
