Tell Us Your Greenwich Village Story

This is the latest installment of the Off the Grid series in which we highlight the people, places and events featured in our new book Greenwich Village Stories, available for purchase now. In the opening lines of his contribution to Greenwich Village Stories, designer Jonathan Adler reflects on the course his life took after moving to the Village: “If I lived above 14^th Street I’d be a regional sales manager for an office supplies concern.” Instead, he is a well-known potter, designer, author, and personality. In his Greenwich Village story, author and comedian Dave Hill notes that he lived on a street made famous by Bob Dylan. “And the odds of that ever happening had I stayed in my native Cleveland really weren’t very good at all,” he adds. For Adler and Hill, living in the Village shaped the direction of their lives, or at the very least gave them an interesting pop culture anecdote.

John Leguizamo has a story to tell about the Village. Patricia Clarkson has one too. Donna Karan and Isaac Mizrahi, Jennifer Finney Boylan and Malcolm Gladwell all have Village stories to share. From icons to local favorites, the contributors to GVSHP’s new release Greenwich Village Stories are part historians and part friendly neighborhood storytellers.

Now it’s your turn to share your Village story. Visit our Facebook page and “Like” Greenwich Village Stories. Then post your story: a memorable event, a chance encounter, or a description of the first time you visited the Village. Make it captivating. Make it lively. Make it quirky. Make it all these things and more, but most of all, show us what the Village means to you. GVSHP staff will narrow entries down to the top five and the winner will be chosen by  Greenwich Village Stories contributor Dave Hill. The winner will receive two tickets to the April 23^rd event Selected Shorts: Greenwich Village Stories at Symphony Space. The contest opens today, Tuesday, April 1^st at noon and closes at noon on Tuesday, April 8^th. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, April 15^th.        

Selected Shorts: Greenwich Village Stories will feature Village residents Parker Posey and Jane Curtin reading fiction set in the Village alongside Greenwich Village Stories contributors Dave Hill, Penny Arcade, Simon Doonan, Ralph Lee, and Isaac Mizrahi reading their vignettes of self-discovery, lost love, and cultural history.
